The marriage of Prince Albert and Duchess Elisabeth

October 1, 1900

By direct wire to the Los Angeles Times.
Prince Albert of the Belgians and Duchess Elisabeth in Bavaria were married today in the "ancient Church of St. Gudule" in Brussels.   The wedding was one the "most brilliant social affair in Belgium for many years.  Royalty was "well represented, the most notable being King Leopold."   The groom is the son of the King's younger brother, the Count of Flanders.
It is being reported that the King, who has no surviving sons, will "shortly abdicate" in Prince Albert's favor.
The Belgian sovereign has long been "aware of his own unpopularity with the masses, and will give up the throne to save the country from revolution."   The Count of Flanders is physically incapacitated and unable to perform "the duties of king."
Albert, seen as a prospective king, is "the most popular member of the royal family."  He has a keen and deep interest in the "conditions of the working people."  He is also well known in the United States, where has spent some time."   The new Princess Elisabeth "is loved by the people of Bavaria for her interest in charity."  She is the daughter of the Duke in Bavaria, Karl Theodor, who is also a noted oculist.
