Prince Rasso of Bavaria (1925-2011)

Prince Rasso of Bavaria, who died yesterday at Tutzing at Lake Starnberg, has been described in several obituaries as the grandson of Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria.  This is incorrect.   Crown Prince Rupprecht was Prince Rasso's uncle.   Prince Rasso was the son of Prince Franz of Bavaria, Rupprecht's younger brother.

An official announcement of Prince Rasso's death was made by the head of the house, HRH Franz Duke of Bavaria.

The late prince, a biologist, was born May 24, 1926 at Schloss Leustetten, near Lake Starnberg.  His family fled the Nazis in the late 1930s, and lived in Hungary until 1945, when Soviet troops invaded the country.   The family returned to live at Schloss Leutstetten, which later became the primary residence of Rasso's older brother, Prince Ludwig, and his wife, Princess Irmingard, a daughter of Crown Prince Rupprecht.

Prince Rasso's great passion was the breeding of short haired dachshunds.   He was a very private man.   Following a requiem mass, he will be buried at Kloster Andechs on Monday.   The funeral mass will be limited for the immediate family and friends.
